The music written for East Van Strings originally came out of an appreciation for the string quartets of Bartok, Webern and Berg.
Since this original inception the material has started to develop on its own taking inspiration from a wide range of sources. Everything from Berg, free jazz, Arabic taqasim, Indian rhythmic cycles, to Philip Glass is included. The inclusion of a wide source of influences, group improvisation, and the unique personality of each of the members has developed into a unique ensemble with a very broad range of expression.
